SANDING - The purpose of sanding is to remove deep scratches left by coarser abrasives during grinding.
SAWING - A thin circular blade, rotates at several thousand surface feet per minute literally scratches its way through a gemstone.
SEMI-PRECIOUS - Used of gemstones having less commercial value than precious stones.
SIMULANT - Artificially created gemstones, with the same appearance, physical and chemical properties. For example: a cubic zirconia.
SYNTHETIC - Artificially created gemstones, with the same appearance, physical and chemical properties. However, these are produced as real diamonds.
SLAB SAW - Saw used in the art of lapidary, usually 16 to 24 inches in diameter.
