Birthstones
Certain gemstones are said to receive their power from the cosmic energies of various planets and have more power at particular times of the year. The month of a gemstone power time determines your birthstone.
Most gem scholars agree that the tradition of birthstones arose from the Breastplate of Aaron: a ceremonial religious garment set with twelve gemstones that represented the twelve tribes of Israel and also corresponded with the twelve signs of the zodiac and the twelve months of the year. However, some also argue that the proper way to assign gems is according to astrological sign and not month.
There are a number of different birthstone traditions that connect a particular gem with a month of the year. The modern day list is based on the Jewelers of America and is the accepted list of today.
Birthstone Traditions covered are Modern, Traditional, Zodiac, Mystical, Ayurvedic, Talismanic, and Ancient Traditional, which include Hebrew, Roman, Arabic, Hindu, Polish, Russian and Italian.
